electric bike battery - EBCO

As eBikes are powered with lithium-ion batteries, they can be sensitive to the change of temperature as we head into the winter months. While the risk of permanent battery damage is low, unless faced with sub-zero temperatures, due to the unpredictable British weather we’ve put together a list of our top tips for getting the most out of your eBike battery this winter.

How can cold weather effect my eBike battery?

When the temperature drops outside, the chemical reactions inside your eBikes battery slows, which can impact the output of power, temporarily effecting your batteries range.

Charging can also be effected by cold weather, meaning it takes longer for your battery to charge, or in extreme temperatures, charging might not happen at all until your battery warms up.

When your battery is charged, cold weather can cause an increased rate of self-discharge, this means that the battery continues to lose charge even when not in use.

Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures can reduce the lifespan of your battery as it is forced to work harder, for a longer period of time. Putting your battery under strain.

How to care for your eBike battery in winter?

Taking care of your eBike battery in the winter is easy to do and does not necessarily require any extra equipment. Our top tips include;

1. Avoid letting your battery fully discharge

Deep discharging or letting your battery completely empty is not recommended, no matter the temperature outside – as it can reduce the life span of your battery. Keeping your battery at a minimum of 20% can help your battery last longer in cold conditions.

2. Store your bike indoors in cold temperatures

Keeping your eBike above 10°C can protect your battery against degradation over time. In the winter months it would be wise to keep it in an insulated shed, garage or hallway to protect it from the elements.

3. Ensure the battery is not too cold before charging

We advise charging your eBike indoors when it’s cold outside to prevent damage to the battery. If your bike has been exposed to cold temperatures outside, let your battery acclimatise to the temperature inside for about 30 minutes before charging.

4. Store with a partial charge

If you don’t plan to use your eBike over the winter months, don’t let it drain to 0% battery power before storing it. Cold weather can increase the rate that your battery discharges when not in use. We recommend ensuring your battery has at least 50% charge before storing it for a long period. Even if you’re not planning on using your eBike during the winter, you might want to check the battery level every couple of months and top it up if needed.

5. Insulate your battery in sub-zero temperatures

If you ride your eBike regularly in freezing temperatures we recommend insulating your battery to ensure it maintains a stable temperature despite the cold. There are a number of different battery covers on the market, the most effective and common are made from neoprene, but you can also use a foam or thermal wrap to insulate your battery.

Why carry out a post-purchase check?

After a few weeks of riding, performing a thorough post-purchase check is crucial. This ensures that everything is still functioning correctly after the initial break-in period, which can sometimes reveal a need for adjustments and fine-tuning for a smooth ride.
This proactive approach helps maintain your eBike’s performance and safety, giving you continued peace of mind as you enjoy your rides.

Here’s a comprehensive checklist to guide you through the post-purchase inspections

eBike Maintenance Checklist

1-Check pedals: Ensure pedals are still attached securely. Remember that pedals are threaded specifically for the left and right sides. A 15mm spanner is required for any adjustments.

2-Adjust handlebars and saddle: Adjust the handlebars and saddle to your preferred height and ensure they are tightened securely. Check all bolts with the appropriate size hex key.

3-Inspect connections: Ensure all battery connections are secure, clean and have no visible damage. Wipe clean with a damp cloth if dirty.

4-Brake inspection: Test the brakes to ensure they engage properly and provide adequate stopping power. Check pad wear regularly.

5-Gear shifting: Shift through all the gears to make sure they are correctly indexed and transition smoothly without skipping or catching.

6-Inflate tyres: Check the tyre pressure against the manufacturer’s recommended PSI and inflate accordingly. Maintaining the correct tyre pressure will reduce rolling resistance and punctures and will increase range.

7-Tyre Inspection: Inspect the tyres for any signs of wear, damage or defects.

8-Lights and Bell: Test all lights (front and rear) and the bell to ensure they are operational, Ensure lights are at the correct angle and clean.

9-Check mechanical components: check bolts, screws, and other fasteners to ensure nothing has come loose.

10 – Check your chain for signs of wear or damage: regularly inspect your eBike’s chain for signs of wear or damage to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Using a chain checker tool is highly recommended for this purpose. Additionally, it’s important to clean and oil the chain regularly to extend its serviceable life.

By following this checklist, you can ensure that your new eBike is safe, fully functional, and ready for many enjoyable rides. Taking these initial steps will give you peace of mind and help you get the most out of your investment.

How Electric Bikes Can Enhance Your Cycling Experience

While traditional cycling offers numerous benefits, some people may find it challenging due to factors like hills, strong winds, or physical limitations. This is where electric bikes come in, offering assistance with pedalling and making cycling more accessible to a wider range of individuals.

How Electric Bikes Work

Electric bikes, also known as e-bikes, are equipped with a motor that provides assistance when pedalling. Riders can choose the level of assistance they need, ranging from minimal support to full electric propulsion. This feature can be especially beneficial for beginners, those recovering from injury, or individuals looking to ease into regular cycling.

In March 2024, the UK Government announced an increased investment in the cycle network with over £100million of funding across walking and cycling routes. As the UK’s cycle infrastructure improves, it’s becoming more and more feasible for people to switch up their commute and start cycling to work – especially with the added benefit of the cycle to work scheme.

The cycle to work scheme was first introduced in 1999 in the UK. After 25 years of the scheme, we understand that there are bags of information out there which can be daunting if you’re thinking of using the scheme for the first time. In this guide, we’ll explain exactly how the cycle to work scheme works and who can benefit.

What is the cycle to work scheme?

The cycle to work scheme allows cyclists who work in the UK to purchase a bike tax-free, saving up to 42% on the cost of a bike or eBike in addition to cycling equipment like helmets, lights and bike locks.

It works similarly to a company car where you sacrifice a part of your salary every month against the cost of the bike for an agreed period of time. You’ll still get your bike straight away, as when you sign up for the scheme you’ll be issued with a voucher against the cost of the bike. Once you receive your bike and/or accessories the monthly agreed fee will be deducted from your pre-tax salary, you’ll see the deduction on your payslip and the savings will be translated into your take-home pay.

What is a salary sacrifice?

A salary sacrifice is an agreement between you and your employer. It reduces your total salary before tax deductions in return for goods. Meaning the cost of your purchase is tax-free. In this case, the salary sacrifice is against the hire of your bike and equipment.

Own now vs Own later

Through the Cycle to Work Scheme you have the option to either own your bike and accessories straight away, or after a 12 month period, or a 4 year period. Choosing the ‘own it later’ option gives you the option of purchasing the bike for a nominal fee after the initial hire period, and gives the largest discount on your chosen bike. If you select the ‘own now’ option you’ll pay the market value for your bike and accessories with a saving of between 18%-25%.

Who is eligible for the cycle to work scheme?

To benefit from the cycle to work scheme, you must meet the following criteria

Can I use the cycle to work scheme if I am unemployed?

No, as the scheme is funded through a salary sacrifice, if you are unemployed you won’t be eligible to take part.

Is there a price limit on the cycle to work scheme?

No, there’s no longer a price limit on the bike you choose for the cycle to work scheme, making it a great choice for eBikes.

Do I have to cycle to work every day?

While the name ‘cycle to work’ implies you need to be on your bike every day. We know the British weather means that it’s not always the optimal conditions to cycle to work. You don’t have to cycle to work every day, or even every week. Many people opt into the cycle to work scheme and use their bikes primarily for leisure, cycling to work in fair-weather or just when they feel like it.

How do I take part in the cycle to work scheme?

To apply for the cycle to work scheme, simply chose the bike you want. Then fill in the details on the CycleScheme website. Some employers have additional savings so don’t forget to include them on your application.

How can EBCO eBikes Help?

Once you receive your voucher, simply select the store where you’d like to collect your EBCO bike from, check out using the code CYCLESCHEME and we will be in touch to redeem your voucher. Then all you need to do is collect your eBike!

eBike Laws and Regulations: A Complete Guide for 2024

Electric bikes (eBikes) have become increasingly popular as sustainable and efficient alternatives to traditional transportation. With their rise in popularity, you might be curious as to what makes an eBike illegal, and if eBikes are legal. This comprehensive guide will explore eBike laws, helping you navigate the regulations and ensure your ride is legal and safe.

What’s the Difference Between eBikes and eMotorbikes?

The main difference between eBikes and eMotorbikes is that eBikes are simply bicycles equipped with an electric motor to assist in propulsion. They have a lower power and speed in comparison to an eMotorbike and are ideal for short commutes and leisure, and are assisted by pedals. Whereas eMotorbikes are controlled by a throttle with more power and speed than an eBike. Technically, eBikes are known as ‘electrically assisted pedal cycles’ (or EAPCs).

Do You Need a License For an Electric Bike?

No, unlike an eMotorbike you do not need a license to ride one, and it does not need to be registered, taxed, or insured.

Legal Requirements for eBikes in the UK

While eBikes are legal, they need to meet three simple requirements to comply with UK laws.

Pedal Requirement

An EAPC or eBike must have pedals that can be used to propel

Motor Power Output

Its electric motor must have a maximum power output of 250 watts

Speed Limit

The electric motor must not provide assistance when it’s travelling more than 15.5mph

When you purchase an eBike with EBCO eBikes, you don’t need to worry about whether or not your bike is legal, as all of our eBikes are 100% compliant.

What age can you ride an electric bike?

There is a minimum legal age requirement for eBikes. You must be at least 14 or over to ride.

What Makes an eBike Illegal?

An electric bicycle not compliant with EAPC regulations (above the 15.5mph or 250w limit, or with a throttle) is categorised as a motor vehicle and requires registration and taxation to be ridden legally. Riding such a vehicle mandates a valid driver’s license and the use of a motorcycle helmet.

Where Can You Ride Your eBike?

These faster bikes cannot be used on cycle lanes, but electric bikes are perfectly legal on UK roads as normal pedal bikes are.

Safe, Legal and Compliant eBikes from EBCO

All EBCO eBikes adhere to the legal requirements for electrically assisted pedal cycles (EAPCs). With pedals for propulsion, a maximum power output of 250 watts, and a speed limit of 15.5mph.

You can enjoy the convenience and benefits of EBCO eBikes without worrying about their legality. Whether commuting through urban streets or exploring scenic bike paths, EBCO eBikes offer a legal and eco-friendly mode of transportation for individuals of all ages, ready to shop eBikes? EBCO is thrilled to announce our exciting new partnership with Switch2zero, a leading pioneer in sustainable technology solutions. In unison, we are forging a path towards a more sustainable future by seamlessly incorporating tree planting into every purchase on our platform.

At EBCO, we understand the importance of sustainable practices and the urgent need to address environmental challenges. With Switch2zero as our trusted partner, we’re now able to make a tangible impact on reforestation through tree planting. This partnership allows us to contribute to a healthier planet and empower our customers to be part of the solution.

One Tree Planted for Every Purchase

Starting today, 20th March 2024, for every bike purchased on our websote, we will be planting a tree through Switch2zero. This means that each time you shop with us, you’re not only getting quality eBikes but also actively participating in creating a greener and more habitable planet.

The Power of Trees: Carbon Sequestration

Trees are nature’s superheroes when it comes to fighting climate change. They play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere through a process called carbon sequestration. This not only helps mitigate climate change but also improves air quality and supports biodiversity.

Every tree planted through our partnership with Switch2zero will sequester an estimated 0.2 metric tons of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) over its lifetime. This impressive carbon sequestration potential demonstrates the long-lasting environmental impact each tree can make.

By planting trees through Switch2zero, we are directly contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, as each tree will in the future actively remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Together, we can make a substantial difference and create a sustainable future for generations to come.

Yes! eBike batteries pose no greater risk than common everyday household electronics. eBike batteries undergo stringent quality control measures, ensuring they meet or exceed safety standards akin to those governing your laptop and mobile phone.

Electric bikes, commonly known as eBikes, have gained immense popularity in recent years. As more and more people embrace the benefits of this eco-friendly mode of transport, questions about the safety of eBike batteries have naturally surfaced. The media keeps reporting of bikes catching fire, sparking concerns among riders and enthusiasts alike.

In this blog post, we will address the common concerns surrounding eBike batteries and provide you with the assurance you need to hit the road confidently.

Explosions and Fire Hazards

One of the main concerns people have is the fear of eBike batteries exploding or catching fire. While these incidents are extremely rare (according to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, incidents of eBike battery explosions or fires are exceedingly rare) it’s essential to understand that eBike batteries are equipped with advanced safety features. These features include temperature sensors, overcharge protection, and thermal management systems that manage and regulate the battery’s temperature to prevent any mishaps. Additionally, the Battery Management System (BMS) plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe operation of eBike batteries by monitoring cell voltage, temperature, and overall battery health, thus providing an extra layer of protection and peace of mind for riders.

Reliability

Skepticism often arises around the reliability of eBike batteries to hold a charge and function optimally. Modern eBike batteries utilize high-quality lithium-ion technology, offering long-lasting performance and excellent reliability. According to a report by the Bike Association (EBA), out of millions of eBikes sold worldwide, the incidence rate of battery-related accidents is less than 0.1%. Of course, it’s crucial to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for charging and storing the battery properly to prolong its lifespan.

Leakage and Toxicity

Concerns related to battery leakage and the potential toxicity of eBike batteries have been circulating. However, it’s important to note that most eBike batteries are sealed and designed to prevent leakage. These batteries undergo stringent testing and meet IP (Ingress Protection) ratings, ensuring that they are generally waterproof. This means that they have not only the highest level of dust protection but can also withstand exposure to rain or splashes without compromising their functionality or safety. Nevertheless, you should never submerge the battery in water or prolonged exposure to extreme weather conditions to maintain its optimal performance and longevity.

Charging Safety

Ensuring safe charging practices is crucial for maintaining the longevity and safety of eBike batteries. Here are some essential tips:

  1. Use the Manufacturer’s Provided Charger: always use the charger provided by the eBike manufacturer to avoid compatibility issues and ensure safe charging.
  2. Avoid Charging in Extreme Temperatures: charge eBike batteries in environments with temperatures ranging between 50°F to 85°F (10°C to 30°C) to prevent damage and ensure optimal performance.
  3. Don’t Leave the Battery Charging Unattended: while modern chargers have safety features, it’s best not to leave the battery charging unattended for extended periods to mitigate risks associated with unexpected events.
  4. Charge in a Well-Ventilated Area: ensure the charging area is well-ventilated to dissipate heat generated during charging, minimizing the risk of overheating.
  5. Monitor Charging Progress: periodically check the charging progress and inspect the battery for any signs of damage or unusual behaviour.
  6. Unplug After Fully Charged: disconnect the charger from the power outlet and battery once the battery is fully charged to prevent overcharging.
  7. Inspect Charger and Cable Regularly: routinely inspect the charger and charging cable for wear or damage, replacing them immediately if necessary.
  8. Charge in a dry environment: only charge an eBike battery indoors or under cover in a dry environment, the charger and the battery should never be exposed to water.

How to ensure Battery Safety

  1. Choose Reliable Brands
Purchasing eBikes and batteries from reputable and trustworthy manufacturers like EBCO or Corratec ensures that you receive quality products that meet rigorous safety standards.
  2. Follow Manufacturer Guidelines
Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for charging, handling and storing eBike batteries to ensure safety, longevity and warranty compliance.

Conclusion

eBike batteries are generally safe when used correctly and purchased from reliable manufacturers. While concerns about battery safety are understandable, it is essential to separate fact from fiction. By dispelling common myths and following the manufacturer’s guidelines, you can confidently enjoy the benefits of eBike technology and embark on thrilling journeys with peace of mind. Remember, properly maintaining and taking care of your eBike battery is crucial for its optimal performance and longevity. So, hop on your eBike, explore the outdoors, and embrace the future of sustainable transportation!
